Photos Duplicate Cleaner App Reviews

Really Great!

I was neverous when changing my Apple ID caused a third of my photos to duplicate for some crazy reason. When I called for support, the person at Apple suggested this program. Works perfectly and so easy to use!

It just does what it says it will!

This was an easy process. It just eliminates duplicate photos. If you want something else, this might be the wrong app for you. I didn’t see a need to upgrade to Pro version.

Does what it says

I needed to clean some duplicates out of my Photos library and this app led me through the process and seemed to do a good job at it. No complaints yet!

EASY BREEZY

10 minutes I had perfect photo album. more space clean to work with. Bravo!

Worked Perfect

Easy to use and does what it says!

Fast and friendly UI

This app is suoer fast and does what is says. I have not wnet fully through it, but what I saw was great.

It works. Try not to overthink it is my advice.

The gist: IF you properly back up your photo library (i.e., have Time Machine spinning a backup to a disk and a second backup somewhere), THEN letting this baby spin on your duplicates brings no peril. Just do it. It took me less than 20 minutes to remove about 8000 files and restore nearly 8 Gb of storage space in a Photos library. I “auto marked” all of the duplicates after going to Preferences and setting auto-mark prefs to mark these images: _non-library photos; _smaller DPI; _smaller size; _images without metaData. Remember, its applying this logic to DUPLICATES and how to choose which to mark. Then I deleted (app walks you through the instructions of what is about to happen and what to do next). Then went into the Duplicates Marked … folder, deleted them. Then went straight to recently deleted items and deleted them for good. Done. Background if you care... My wife’s frustration with keeping photos straight through the variety of changes Apple has made to how they integrate photo libraries and devices over the last 10 years has been getting higher and higher. Alas on Photos she had about 20 Gb in her library, many of which she knew were duplicates, mostly caused by re-syncing devices (phone or iPad) on which photos had been deleted and then importing them again into Photos library. I chose this app because it sounded from the reviews like it just worked. And it does. Reading one review on ads, I was willing to buy the Pro version (for $3) but couldn’t see any real value in doing that (in fact, I couldn’t tell what it would do that this didn’t do). THIS version is for Photos - not iPhotos. In their “Help” files they point this out and point to a version of this app for iPhotos (lots of reviewers complaining about the instructions and about the lack of iPhotos support - guess I don’t understand the complaint). It works.

Works pretty well. Filters Need a Tweak

I downloaded and tried the app which worked pretty well. It took a minute to play with the interface to understand what I was doing, then it was pretty straight forward. So not bad. I used it to find dupes in my folders and then my library. The interface allows a quick comparison of duplicates along with the data of the selected photo making the review a little easier. There are preferences for filter selections which are set up pretty well, save for the one I wanted to change. It defaults to keeping the lastest copy of the photo. I wanted to keep the earliest. Unchecking the filter didn’t do that. It continued to choose the latest. Fortunately, you can command-click on multiple photos and right click on the group to mass unmark and mark to reverse this. I didn’t have a large group of photos that I was working with, but if I did, this could have become tedious. Other than that, it worked well and had a nice set of directions that popped up at the end to help locate the duplicates in Photos that were isolated for deletion.

Clickbait

If I wanted to pay for the pro version, I would pay for the pro version. I do not need a reminder EVERY time a scan finishes. Declare that it’s adware and just a bait to advertize the pro version without actually saying it. I can’t review the performance because I’m stuck on the deceptive marketing.

Works like a charm

Perfect instructions, I was able to delete only 122 duplicates, but it sure did work easily. The instructions were clear (follow them!) and it worked perfectly the first time. It always lets you see what you are going to do next without any “destructive” “background” activity. You do the deleting once they are identified. Excellent!

Free and works … all i needed

does the job, it’s good. I’m a software developer and it took me 3 minutes to clear 400 dupes from problems importing photo in itunes.

Worked fine… once.

The first time I ran it, it found a duplicate that I knew I already had in my Photos library. The automated process to move the duplicate to its own album for ease of deleting it worked great. I deleted the duplicate. So far, so good. Then I imported a few more pictures into Photos that I knew were duplicates. When I ran Photos Duplicate Cleaner again, not only did it not find the new duplicates, it kept reporting the one that I had deleted the first time. I tried a number of things — restarting Photos Duplicate Cleaner, removing then readding my Photos library from it, removing the empty duplicate photos album from Photos — but nothing made a difference.

It works and its free

This is a great little app to deal with one of the many annoyances you may have after moving from iPhoto to Photos.app The only thing to be negative about is that the time to render the proposed duplicates is not zero. So it takes a bit of time to dig through a few hundred duplicates to make 100% sure you are not deleting something you want to keep. In my case this was unnecessary, the app auto marked all duplicates and no other pictures.

Wonderful app

Very thankful for this app, and it’s amazing that it’s free! Thank you for saving me tons of time!

Did exactly what it said.

Not a whole lot more to say than it worked as promised and for FREE!

Lightning fast compared to other duplicate finders

I have over 400k photos in my library with many, many duplicates from years of upgrading systems and not properly copying the pics over. I have tried many other apps to find duplicates in my libraries and none have worked this fast! I love this app! Sure, I would love to be able to fine tune the filter to further expand my duplicate search to include eliminating thumbnails, as well as similar photos taken within seconds of each other…I imagine/hope these kinds of tweaks might come in the future? But in the meantime, this app has immediately helped me successfully wipe out 89k duplicates in literally 30 minutes or so in 2 libraries! Only 7 more to go… Before, it would have meant that my system would have been tied up for days & god help me if my system crashed!

great functionality; constantly crashing

This is extremely helpful and since I expect to only use this for a limited time, don’t mind working around the crashes. After scanning and comparing the results, it consistently crashes after a period of scrolling through the comparisons. I just reopen and move on - not sure if it is because of the size/volume or what. Again, love the app - just wish it would stay up while I work.

Don’t bother

Yes it’s easy and yes it found lots of duplicates and let me resolve them, BUT: It didn’t recognize when I duplicated a photo in the Photos app and cropped/edited/changed it, and so the app tried to deleted it It only found a small percentage of duplicates, I still had tons that are easy to identify (like the same file name plus a ‘-1’) And yes I tried to run it multiple times hoping each time it would catch more and more duplicates but after one pass it couldn’t find anything else. Maybe this is why they try to get you to upgragde to the paid version as soon as you launch the app...

Great resource for being free.

Works really well and is pretty easy to use, especially for being free. Some small tweaks to the filters would be huge though. Frequently it auto-marks exactly the wrong photos, and instead of a quick “toggle selection” or something, I have to check the ones I want checked manually. I’m also not convinced it does a great job with the same image in different sizes. Overall though, great for being free.

Does the job!

Was looking for an app that could help me tame my duplicate photo problem... all I could find were paid options, until this! Requires a bit of manual work switching between Photos and this app, but gets the job done. Very happy with it!
